POVERTY

 Poverty is real.

Is it the result of the sin of an individual? Of an ancestor?
Is it merely the result of circumstances?
Can it be helped? Should the person living in poverty be blamed for it?

I think it's a mixture.  Certainly, an individual's work ethic can be a factor in his financial status.  Some are less fortunate than others, though, because of location, family heritage (by this I mean specifically WHICH family one is born into--not race), ignorance of opportunity, lack of opportunity...the factors could be countless.

It can be helped.  The welfare system exists, though it could use to be modified.  Old Testament Law gave the first example of a usefull welfare system.  Don't cut the corners of your field, eg.  It is up to us, I think, to care for the poor.

i agree, though i do think it is possible for poverty to be caused as a punishment for sin, both yours or an ancestors.

In my opinion the welfare system only contributes to the poverty. People who look at the poverty system realize that they can get practically free money by quitting their job and that they can be lazy and not have to do anything. If they join for that reason they are (only in my opinion) sinning, because the Bible says that a man who does not work does not deserve to eat.

Poverty, I think, can be either a trial from God sent to test our faith (look at Job!) or a punishment for sin (usually laziness, as it is the direct result of that). And it is true, it is a punishment that affects future generations.
I believe that people who are in that situation should do all that they can to get out of it, but at the same time submit to God's will and seek to grow in Him through the circumstances.
One popular CCM song, inspired by Job 1:21 and Philippians 4:11-12, describes very well what our outlook should be:

Every blessing You pour out
I'll turn back to praise;
When the darkness closes in, Lord,
Still i will say,

Blessed be the Name of the Lord,
Blessed be Your Name.
Blessed be the Name of the Lord,
Blessed be Your glorious Name.

You give and take away,
You give and take away;
My heart will choose to say,
Lord, blessed be Your Name.

I would dare to respond that your statement about poverty being a punishment for laziness is perhaps due to a lack of experience with impoverished people. Some are poor because they want to be, because staying on the street is one way to stay free from constraints of any kind. Some wake up one day and find themselves poor, through no choice or expectation of their own, but because of the economic situation of the society in which they live. This is happening with alarming frequency in many places in Europe where the wages are just not keeping up with the cost of living.
Read up, and perhaps volunteer at a homeless shelter or a soup kitchen. My personal conviction is that the western church has far too little contact with the poor. It is one way in which we are disobeying Scripture.

As a person who is considered poor.  My rent takes up more than 50% of my income poverty is the by product of cost living being so high and the big ole companies just want to fatten there pockets.  I work overtime.  I have work two jobs.  Not anymore since I ws not getting enough sleep.  still not. I still work overtime when offered.  I work overnight to get the shift pay.  Without it I would not even survie a little.  There Has been monthes when I ws not able to buy food.  And the government says I amke too much money to help.  But if I was someone who just pop out babies and lived off welfare....

I have been homeless before I was a christian.  I am a baby christian.  I had left my ex-fiancee after he hit me in the face with just the shirt on my back.  I was crashing from one place to another.  I lost one f my jobs due to it but was able to keep the other.

Povert happens because people do not care anymore the government does not care anymore, There just is not any help for those who work hard and just trying to make ends meat.  Who cares about being rich with money I just would like to be able to live off my income.  I use someone elses computer and internet since they know I do not have one and cannot afford to have my own.
